The German news magazine Der Spiegel claims the Spain international tested positive for anti-inflammatory drug dexamethasone, which is only banned if testers are not informed of its use.

Real Madrid have unequivocally denied a case that club captain Sergio Ramos fizzled a doping test after the 2017 Champions League final, and furthermore that the best possible systems were not pursued when the present Spain captain was requested to step through an examination following a La Liga diversion against Malaga in April 2018.
