Argentine Lionel Messi has won the FIFA World Player of the Year award, beating Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Dutchman Virgil van Dyke, who has been voted UEFA Player of the Year.

Messi led Barcelona to the league title last season and was crowned the top scorer with 36 goals. He also topped the Champions League scorers with 12 goals and reached the semi-finals with his team.
Messi was also knocked out of the semi-finals of the Copa America by Brazil, who later won the title.
