Faroe Islands

28 March 2021 18:45 UK/ 19:45 CET World Cup Qual

Austria and Faroe Islands take on each other in a David-vs-Goliath clash at Ernst Happel Stadion on Sunday evening.

The Austrians shared the spoils with Scotland in the opening match of their World Cup qualifying campaign, with Stuttgart attacker Sasa Kalajdzic scoring a brace.

The Bundesliga rising star has been producing excellent displays in Marko Arnautovic’s absence, and we predict that he is going to prove a handful for the opposition defenders.

The minnows, on the other hand, came from behind to share the spoils with Moldova in their last league match.

Faroe Islands failed to win the previous four games in all competitions, and we do not believe that they are capable of shocking Austria in Wien.

Experienced defender Odmar Faero is unlikely to feature in Sunday’s clash after suffering an injury in the draw with Moldova. In the previous meeting between the two national teams Austria outplayed Faroe Islands 3-0.

Team News:

Having made just one change during the draw with Scotland, Foda will almost certainly bring some fresh faces into his Austria starting lineup.

Alessandro Schopf, Marcel Sabitzer and Michael Gregoritsch are all in contention to feature in the team, while Andreas Ulmer may feature at left-back if Alaba is rested.

The versatility of the players who could come into the team may lead to Foda switching from the 4-4-2 system which was used versus Scotland.

Heini Vatnsdal is in line to feature for the Faroe Islands after Odmar Faero sustained an injury against Moldova.

After coming off the substitutes' bench to score his team's equaliser, Meinhard Olsen could be recalled on the left flank.

Austria possible starting lineup:
Schlager; Lainer, Dragovic, Lienhart, Ulmer; Schopf, Grillitsch, Ilsanker, Schlager; Sabitzer; Gregoritsch

Faroe Islands possible starting lineup:
