Dortmund vs Mainz Prediction & Match Preview

Borussia Dortmund vs Mainz
German Bundesliga
Date: Saturday, 16 January 2021
Kick-off at 14:30 UK/ 15:30 CET
Venue: Signal Iduna Park (Dortmund).

Following a thrilling 3-1 win over Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund will be looking to stay in the title race when they welcome Mainz at their Signal Iduna Park on Matchday 16.

Edin Terzic’s troops have been producing fine performances in the Bundesliga ever since top scorer Erling Haland returned from injury, and, no doubt, the title-chasing hosts are high on spirits ahead of the visit of Mainz.

Axel Witsel, who suffered an Achilles injury in the victory over Leipzig, misses the Mainz game.

Die Nullfunfer, on the other hand, aim to put an end to their three-game losing run in the German top flight, but given their shaky defence, anything but a routine home win would be a major surprise.

The likes of Kunde Malong, Nebel, Tauer, and Kilian are all out of contention with injuries for the visiting team.

In their last meeting at Signal Iduna Park Mainz shocked Borussia Dortmund, meaning that the hosts are hungry for revenge.

Team News:

Dortmund's impressive victory at Leipzig came at a major cost, with Axel Witsel having to undergo surgery to repair an Achilles tendon rupture in recent days. The midfielder could miss the rest of the season, with Can likely to be handed a more regular starting berth in the Belgian's place.

Marcel Schmelzer and Thorgan Hazard, meanwhile, continue to be unavailable to Terzic, with Jude Bellingham doubtful due to a muscle strain.

With a testing trip to Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday, Terzic may be tempted to rest a few players given the significance of that fixture and Mainz's dire form of late, but equally could opt to substitute players if his side can gain a comfortable lead.

Mainz, meanwhile, welcomed Robin Zentner and Levin Oztunali back to the side in the defeat to Frankfurt, but Edmilson Fernandes is unavailable due to COVID-19.

Luca Kilian, Niklas Tauer and Paul Nebel are all doubtful due to injury, with Pierre Kunde ruled out. Mateta should return to the starting XI after only being used as a substitute at the weekend.
