Barcelona vs Athletic Bilbao Prediction & Match Preview

Barcelona vs Athletic Bilbao
Spain – Super Cup
Date: Sunday, 17 January 2021
Kick-off at 20:00 UK/ 21:00 CET
Venue: Estadio de La Cartuja.

Estadio de la Cartuja will host the Spanish Super Cup final between Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao.

Messi-less Barca defeated Real Sociedad on penalties in the semis, but the Argentina superstar could recover in time to face the Lions.

Even though Messi is rated doubtful for the decider, we believe that punters can find value in betting on Ronald Koeman’s troops, who have been showing signs of improvement of late.

The Basques did well to shock Real Madrid in the Super Cup semi-final, and they are eager to claim yet another major scalp.

However, we are not tempted to put our money on the underdogs this time out as they failed to impress in the La Liga loss to Barca (2-3) earlier in January.

Coutinho, Fati, Pique, and Roberto remain in Barcelona’s recovery room, while Berchiche, Lopez, and Nolaskoain are out of contention for the nominal visitors.

Team News:

Barca will again be without the services of Philippe Coutinho, Gerard Pique, Sergi Roberto and Ansu Fati through injury, but Lionel Messi could return from the hamstring issue that forced him to miss the semi-final.

Sergino Dest was also left out of the XI against Sociedad due to a slight issue, but the summer arrival should return, taking the place of Oscar Mingueza in the process.

Koeman is expected to resist the temptation to shuffle his pack on Sunday, meaning that Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele should retain their spots in attack, with Martin Braithwaite expected to be the player to drop out to allow Messi to return to the side.

As for Athletic, Unai Lopez and Peru Nolaskoain remain unavailable for selection through injury, while Yuri Berchiche is still a doubt, meaning that Mikel Balenziaga should continue at left-back.

It would not be a surprise to see Marcelino select the same XI that took to the field against Madrid, with Inaki Williams joining Raul Garcia in the final third, where there should also be spots for Iker Muniain and Oscar de Marcos in the wide positions.

Mikel Vesga and Alex Berenguer are options for change in midfield, but Unai Vencedor should again get the nod alongside Dani Garcia in the middle of the park.

Barcelona possible starting lineup:

Athletic Bilbao possible starting lineup:
Simon; Capa, Nunez, Martinez, Balenziaga; De Marcos, Vencedor, D Garcia, Muniain; Williams, R Garcia
