Barcelona vs Real Sociedad Prediction & Match Preview

Barcelona vs Real Sociedad
Spain – La Liga
Date: Wednesday, 16 December 2020
Kick-off at 20:00 UK/ 21:00 CET
Venue: Camp Nou (Barcelona).

The home side come into this game on the back of a 1-0 victory over Levante at the weekend. The performance and result, albeit a clean sheet and victory, did not do much to repair a giant that is in crisis.

They continue to be without direct width in terms of tactics and personnel with Koeman’s insistence on an over-reliance on Sergino Dest and Jordi Alba to offer Barcelona’s only wide play. Dembele and Fati remain sidelined with injury.

Real Sociedad’s fast start has began to catch up with them, especially alongside Europa League commitments which will continue in the new year.

Injuries have also meant that La Real are now winless in six matches in all competitions - remarkably, though, they are all draws.

A 1-1 draw at home to an Eibar side in brilliant away form backed up a frustrating but not disastrous 0-0 draw against Alaves and a mutually satisfactory 1-1 draw with Villarreal.

Both sides could be in better form but only one side is at a generational low-point. Both teams to score should be a solid bet for this one.

Team News:

Barcelona confirmed before the Levante encounter that Ousmane Dembele had suffered yet another injury, and the Frenchman will miss out here with that latest hamstring problem.

Gerard Pique, Ansu Fati and Sergi Roberto are all sidelined for the long term, with the latter recently testing positive for coronavirus as he recovers from a thigh problem.

Samuel Umtiti is finally back in the fold and pushing for a start at centre-back, while Pedri was given a 30-minute run out against Levante and, having impressed, could be in line for a start in this one.

Sociedad are plagued by injuries as well, with Aritz Elustondo struggling with rib problems and set to watch this one from the sidelines.

The highly-rated Mikel Oyarzabal is also unlikely to feature as he nurses a muscle injury, and while David Silva was fit enough to come off the bench at the weekend, he may not be ready to start just yet.

Portu and Adnan Januzaj will both be expected to feature from the first whistle at Camp Nou, while Nacho Monreal and Martin Zubimendi could be in line for starting roles too.
